The Dandie Dinmont Terrier originates in the border area of Scotland and England. They are believed to be the result of cross breeding the English Terrier, Skye Terrier, Otterhound and Bedlington Terrier. They were used for hunting small game. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1886.

The current Dandie Dinmont terriers are named after a personality in a very popular Sir Walter Scott book that was written in the early 1900's. At that time, they were mostly bred by British Gypsies and used for the hunting of rodents. When dog breeding became trendy in the 19th century, many people began keeping Dandies. These dogs remained popular into the 20th century.

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier makes wonderful companion dogs for most families, even those in small apartments and homes. They are affectionate and kind, and they will bond strongly with family members. These dogs are very clever and also stubborn at times. They love to play and are always keen on pleasing their owners. Although they are eager to satisfy, if there is something that calls for their attention, it will be almost impossible to call them off. They usually do not do well in obedience and should be trained correctly from puppyhood onwards. If socialised properly, these dogs will not be aggressive toward other dogs.

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier will need a firm but also hand in training. They can be fairly stubborn at times, but training is fairly simple for this clever breed. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier does not do very well with obedience training and have a very short attention span. Dandie Dinmonts are not very interested in training, so it is therefore important to be firm and consistent. Training should be fun for this breed as they love to play and run around.

Perhaps the most unique characteristic of Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs is its physical appearance. Some would describe the Corgi as a fox-like dog, trapped in a miniature dog's body. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi has ears similar looking to that of a fox's. It can be anywhere between 10-13 inches tall, weighing around 25-45 pounds. These dogs have somewhat stocky but elongated bodies with very short legs. It's exterior coat ranges from short to medium length and comes in shades of brown or black with white markings.

There are several theories about the origin of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and many believe that both Corgi breeds are related to the Swedish Vallhunds. These dogs have been brought to Wales by the Vikings during the 800s.

Another premise is that the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is the older of the two Corgi breeds, and that the Celts brought them to Wales in about 1200 BC. The name "Corgi" is derived from the word "dog" in Celtic. The Corgi has many natural talents that include herding, hunting, and guarding. Seeing that these dogs are fairly low, they manage to move out of the way whenever a cow kicked. These days the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is primarily a companion dog.

The Border Terrier hails from the North of England, but you can find them in Cumberland, Northumberland and West Moreland as well. Most breeds commmon to the North of England are so closely related that it is difficult to say which descended from which...

The Border Terrier may well be the product of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier and the Bedlington Terrier, yet it might have been the ancestor of one of these breeds.

It appears that the breed was known at the end of the 17th Century as a sporting dog. It has been known by it's present name for over 1 Century.

What a great little companion - the Border Terrier!
